Faith
as an 'ism'
Practices
and beliefs that assign different value (worth) to people because
of their religion or creed or because they do not have any religious
affiliation.
Peel
board students and staff reflect the diverse population of Peel,
which includes numerous cultures, languages and faiths. According
to Statistics Canada, Canada is still a predominately Christian,
although the numbers of people identifying as Christian are declining.
There is an increase in the number of Canadians identifying as having
'no religion'. There has also been an increase in the number of
Canadians identifying as Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs with
most living in the census metropolitan area of Toronto. Statistics
for the Region of Peel reveal a similar situation. If we are to
achieve equity for students and staff, then we must consider and
respect the dynamics of faith within the multicultural, multifaith
diversity of Canadian society.
