Heterosexism A belief that heterosexuality is the only normal and acceptable sexual orientation, and is superior to other orientations. It is commonly accepted that approximately one person in 10 is gay or lesbian – this includes our staff and students. In addition, some of our students come from homes with two moms or two dads. In a society where heterosexuality is the "norm", homophobic discrimination and harassment can range from anti-gay slurs to social exclusion to physical violence. This creates a hostile environment that hurts us all. If we are to achieve equity for students and staff, then we must address issues of homophobia and heterosexism in our school and work environments.
