Sexism

Any action or attitude that treats an individual or a group differently based on their sex, gender identity, or the beliefs and practices that give men an advantage over women or devalue women.

Society has made tremendous progress in ensuring equal rights for men and women. Yet more work needs to be done to:

  • challenge stereotypes that prevent true gender equality
  • ensure that the curriculum is not biased against women
  • teach our children to treat each other with respect
  • convey the seriousness of sexual harassment
  • address our unbalanced workforce (e.g. not enough male teachers in the elementary program)

If we are to achieve equity for students and staff, then we must recognize and deal with the sexism that still exists in our learning and work environment.
